Barista course helps young people gain jobs

Young people from Welshpool and across the Perth metropolitan area who are from linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds are being provided with an opportunity to benefit from a training programme being run by the Australian Arab Association.

The Beginners Barista course has been made possible with the support of a $30,000 contribution from the Office of Multicultural Interests’ Community Grants Programme and was introduced in 2017 to assist participants to gain positions within the hospitality industry.

Those participating in the course are gaining valuable skills by working at community festivals in pop-up cafes run by the Association. Course graduates are then able to transition into full or part time employment with various local businesses.

Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Interests, Paul Papalia said that by partnering with the project, local businesses were providing real job opportunities and a chance for participants to gain practical experience and added:

"The Beginners Barista course is a forward-thinking program created by an innovative community group. It provides pathways to employment for vulnerable young people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.”

The government said it is also providing $40,000 in support for this year’s Australian Arab Festival, which is to be held in Burswood on March 28.

Flyer printing often assists in promoting major community events such as festivals celebrating diverse cultures.

The main aim of the Australian Arab Festival is to showcase the depth and richness of Arab cultures.
