Australia Post invests in Welshpool

Australia Post has announced a major Western Australian investment in the form of a new parcel facility. The $82 million project is to meet growing ecommerce demand.

The Welshpool facility will be located near the existing Perth Parcel Centre, within proximity of the Welshpool Business Hub. Set to be 23,000 square metres in size, with the latest automatic sortation equipment, the facility will have a processing capacity of 14,000 parcels per hour on day one, with the ability to scale up to 23,000 parcels per hour.

An onsite distribution centre will further improve speed of service for customers. The investment comes as the pandemic has seen online shopping grow in Western Australia by 22.6 percent in the year to August 2021.

National ecommerce growth is seeing postal workforces gear up alongside infrastructure investment. Australia Post is currently filling 1,600 permanent and fixed-term roles around the nation, as well as 3,300 casual positions to cater to the expected increase in demand over the holiday period. Stationery printers offering custom greeting cards often experience the same trend for a seasonal increase in demand.

According to Primer Mover Magazine, Australia Post’s Executive General Manager People and Culture, Sue Davies, said:

“At the moment, every day feels like Christmas at Australia Post and we’re on the lookout for people to join us and help deliver and process record volumes across the country.”

The new facility is expected to be completed for Christmas 2022. It comes on top of investment in a Butler facility, due to be finished by October 2022.
