Applications open for youth leadership programme

Welshpool youth are among many across the City of Canning being invited to join a new leadership programme called CANNECT.

A City of Canning initiative, the programme is aimed at young people aged 15 to 20 and has been introduced to equip each of the participants with the leadership skills and confidence to make changes and leave a positive mark on the community’s future.

Participants in the 12 month programme will provide their thoughts and insights on City initiatives and projects that are of interest to both their peers and themselves. In past years, youth involved in CANNECT have been afforded the chance to get involved in project delivery and planning of events such as Youth Fest.

Youth Fest and other events often involve marketing campaigns using printing services for key promotional materials.

As part of the programme, participants have also been provided with a platform on which to speak about ideas and concerns regarding issues that relate to the city’s young people. The rare opportunity to be empowered by leadership opportunities and influential mentors has also been forthcoming within CANNECT.

City of Canning Mayor Patrick Hall said that when the 12 months is at an end, the aim is for all youth involved to have a broader view of what is happening worldwide and be inspired enough through added confidence, skills and social connection to work towards making real change.
