Airport project a contender for construction award

The Gateway WA Perth Airport and Freight Access initiative may be recognised with an award, and this could feature in corporate material.

The scheme is up for a prize at the Australian Construction Achievement Award (ACAA) and this could be in part because the work was completed a year before the deadline. It is also the case that the construction was finished without exceeding the expenditure set aside for the activity in the budget.

The distance between Perth Airport and the CBD of the city is small, with several suburbs like Welshpool being close at hand. If the ACAA is given to the project then newsletter printing from Welshpool could be used to help mark the achievement.

Over $950m was spent on the building work. The road building was carried out by an alliance of contractors. This partnership involved a range of organisations including Main Roads Western Australia, CPB Contractors, AECOM, Georgiou and BG&E.

As a result of the collective effort, a section of Tonkin Highway was widened. This means that a stretch of seven kilometres of the road is now six lanes in width. Meanwhile, a shorter section of Leach Highway has received an upgrade, and is now of expressway standard. Cyclists and pedestrians have also gained from the investment in the local transport infrastructure. Over 20 kilometres of shared paths have been created and new connections made.
