100th engine marks milestone for Rio Tinto and mental health awareness

A program aimed at raising funds for mental health awareness has been able to raise over $19,000 in a collaborative effort between Komatsu Australia, engine supply company Cummins, and Rio Tinto.

The program, which replaces engines in Rio Tinto’s Iron Ore (RTIO) heavy haul Komatsu vehicles, has been raising money for Beyond Blue since 2017 by throwing a fundraising barbeque each time a new engine is received. Poster printing may be used to promote events that may be of interest within the community.

Cummins has now supplied Rio Tinto with its 100th MCRS engine module and the significant event has been celebrated with a cheque for $19,400 at the Komatsu depot in Welshpool.

Dean Vissaggio, the Cummins product support manager for RTIO, said it was important to recognise the increase in the number of cases of anxiety and depression reported in the community, especially for fly-in, fly-out workers in the mining industry as well as isolated communities.

General manager in Western Australia for Komatsu, Glenn Swift said that the engine rebuild program is helping to generate more jobs and improve job security as well as advance the creation of additional resources for Western Australia’s economy.

The 100th engine also marks the 100th anniversary for Cummins and has been given the serial number of 9800100.
