Worlds top players set for action at Australian Open squash tournament

International players are heading to Melbourne, Victoria, for the 2015 Australian Open Squash tournament.

Organisers said the quality field of entrants will include 12 of the 50 top women squash players in the world. Among them are Australia’s Rachael Grinham, Joelle King from New Zealand and Hong Kong’s highly successful Annie Au.

Cameron Pilley, of Australia, will lead a top cast of competitors in the men’s draw, with players travelling from Pakistan, Hong Kong, India and Malaysia to participate in the coveted event.

World number 10 Annie Au has been a standout achiever in recent competitions, having won the major HKFC International event in Hong Kong and finishing runner-up to Malaysia’s Nicol David, who is currently World number one in the Asian Championship.

At 26 and returning from injury, Joelle King - who took out the 2009 Australian open final after defeating Annie Au - is among key players to watch, according to organisers.

Chasing a national title at this year’s Australian Open is Cameron Pilley, who has been runner-up three times and is also a gold medal winner at the Commonwealth Games.

The executive director of Squash and Racquetball Victoria, Fiona Young, said with so many of the top squash players competing in this year’s event, the public will be able to gain a great appreciation of how good it is to watch matches live through the all-glass court, when the Australian Open is held from August 2nd to 9th at the Melbourne Sport and Aquatic Centre.
