The City of Melbourne aims to bring new experiences to the CBD, with the latest being a virtual outdoor arcade known as The Open Arcade in Queensbridge Square.
Digital sensing technology allows players to control the game by body movement, then broadcast onto a big screen in the square. The Open Arcade is a pop-up event that is free of charge and offers four digital games. Up to 12 players can play at one time in a fun and inclusive experience suitable for all ages and abilities.
The council partnered with SAGE Group and Swinburne University for a soft launch over December to gauge popularity. Over 100 games a day were played, encouraging the council to move forward with an extended program ending March 3. The council expects thousands of participants over the next six weeks.
The project is part of the "Reimagining the City Challenge". The council asked for submissions from companies and organisations with digital technology ideas to bring life back into the CBD. The council offered a range of support measures, including funding for the four successful submissions. Collaboration between organisations was encouraged, with pitches from multiple groups looked upon favourably.
Organisers of modern high-tech events often find the target market is especially receptive to bright, inventive poster printing.
Open Arcade is free and runs daily from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm until March 3.
