Sporting venue to welcome film buffs for charity screening

The cameras have been rolling for years at Melbourne, Victoria’s MCG to capture the best cricket and AFL action live, but soon the classic footage will take on a new look and be viewed by a new audience.

In a rare event at the MCG, the playing surface will be transformed into an open air cinema for the public.

The two giant scoreboards will become movie screens at the viewings and, instead of a vast array of Promotional Products and eateries being available for purchase, movie buffs will be urged to take along their own snacks, pillows and rugs and make the two separate screenings a true family picnic night out. Some selected food outlets at the G will also be available.

Chief executive of the Melbourne Cricket Club Stephen Gough said arguably the hallowed turf of the MCG would be the most spectacular of the world’s open air cinemas.

Proceeds from each screening will benefit the Bank of Melbourne Neighbourhood Fund, which assists programmes and local charities in providing sustainable benefits to those in need within the community. Many of these charities receive little funding from the government.

Moviegoers will be treated to a screening of ‘Million Dollar Arm’ on February 12, followed the next night by ‘The Martian’. Tickets are limited to 2,000 per session and gates open at 6:30 pm for an 8:30 pm start. Children aged five and under may attend free of charge.
