Splash-hit comedy to play in Melbourne CBD area

Theatre fans in the Melbourne CBD area can see a lively play that is based on true happenings behind one of the most talked-about films of the 1970s.

The Shark is Broken is a stage play and comedy about the happenings that took place behind the scenes when filming Jaws in 1974. Joseph Nixon and Ian Shaw are the playwrights, with Shaw having a connection to the film as his father, Robert Shaw, was one of the main actors, along with Richard Dreyfuss and Roy Scheider.

The premise of the comedic play is the conversations that went on between the three actors who were stuck on the boat Orca during filming as the mechanical shark, Bruce, was broken, and tempers and egos were tested.

The play opened in Brighton, England, in 2019, then went on to play at the Ambassadors Theatre in the West End in 2021, receiving a nomination for Best Entertainment or Comedy Play in the Laurence Olivier Awards.

A theatre critic from The Guardian, UK, called it:
“Absolutely brilliant. A masterclass in physical comedy and the absurdity of ambition.”

Theatres sometimes sell Promotional Products such as T-Shirts, baseball caps and programs as merchandise of the plays performed.

The Shark is Broken will be showing from 15 October until 8 November at the Athenaeum Theatre 1, 188 Collins Street, Melbourne. Tickets cost from $55.
