Much-loved hippy musical to play in Melbourne CBD
Inhabitants of Melbourne CBD can join an audience to see a modern rendition of the musical HAIR.
This rock musical debuted in Broadway in 1968. With lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado and Galt MacDermot composing the music, the play encompassed themes of anti-war feeling in the Vietnam war era, sixties counterculture and a sense of freedom.
Glenn Elston has been the Australian Director of the Australian Shakespeare Company since 1998. Pioneering outdoor theatre, he has also produced a selection of national and international shows, including The Sir George Martin in Concert and the Torch Song Trilogy. He has also produced and directed at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, London. His new production of HAIR truly celebrates the original, abounding in bell-bottoms, fringes and beading, long hair and barefoot wonder.
Stand out feel-good songs include Good Morning, Starshine, Aquarius and Let the Sunshine In. These resonate with a modern audience maybe more than ever, as the audience is called upon to reflect on global responsibility, community, identity and peace in our time.
Programmes are often much-coveted souvenirs of theatrical productions, often featuring bold graphic design and produced and distributed using local printing services.
Hair: The Tribal Love Rock Musical is taking place from Saturday 25th October until Sunday 23rd November at the Athenaeum Theatre, 188 Collins Street, Melbourne 3000. Times vary. Tickets cost from $69.
