An architect from St Kilda is set to appear on new TV show Australia’s Best Houses after creating a unique property using milk bottles.
David Saunders’ six-year project has seen him design and build a one-of-a-kind two-storey home that he shares with his two children and his wife, Lena. It makes use of nearly one million recycled bottles, and features solar panels, its own water supply and a rooftop ‘farm’, all of which are helping the family in their mission to become self-reliant.
The Argyle Street home is not only functional, it also has a sense of fun. Mr Saunders believes this is missing from a lot of contemporary architecture, with some designer houses verging on what he described as “pretentious”.
The light-hearted features include brightly coloured walls, a pea green bathtub and windows at ankle height which allow light in without a loss in privacy. The property also boasts rustic steps made from recycled wood and a bath which is backlit with modern down-lighting. For Mr Saunders, the priority was his family and making sure they benefit from the home’s design.
The more serious message of sustainability is something that Mr Saunders’ design company, s2design, champions across its residential and commercial projects.
Design firms in Melbourne often make use of business card printing services to ensure they’re able to network with potential clients, especially around high-profile TV appearances.
Those who want to see more of the home’s features can tune into Channel 7TWO's Australia's Best Houses on Saturday November 23 at 5:00pm.
