Melbourne CBD is set to host the inaugural Birrarangga Film Festival which will be held to celebrate the world’s Indigenous filmmakers and showcase their uniquely special stories.
The four-day festival will bring to the screen more than 40 inspiring, raw, heart-breaking and beautiful short and feature length films.
Actor and Wurundjeri/Yorta Yorta screen creative Tony Briggs (also responsible for creating The Sapphires) has curated the festival, which will focus on presentations that explore ‘humanity through family and culture’.
As artistic director, Briggs said he was honoured in this, the International year of Indigenous Languages, to present the first Birrarangga Film Festival in Victoria, adding:
“We are proud to introduce a film festival that unites the stories of Indigenous people from around the globe, highlighting their languages, beauty and the unification of people through the humanity of their cultures. A festival that we hope will contribute to, enlighten, fulfil and enrich our community.”
Creative Industries Minister Martin Foley explained the event will feature an extraordinary programme that will include workshops, special events and screenings. Poster printing often Forms part of the marketing schedule for major events such as this.
The Australian premiere of Canadian film Sgaawaay K’uuna (Edge of the Knife) will open the festival on April 26. Creative Victoria, Film Victoria and ACMI are joining Typecast Entertainment to produce the festival.
