The state government has approved plans for three apartment tower blocks within Melbourne.
The trio of buildings are to be located on
the banks of the Yarra River. Brochure printers in South Melbourne could be used to promote the apartments when the construction work is completed. Richard Wynne, the minister for planning, announced:
“This is a good development in a prime location near Southern Cross Station, trams and public space along the Yarra River which will provide more housing at the gateway between the CBD and Docklands.”
Architectural firm Elenberg Fraser is behind the initiative. When the towers are finished, they will be topped by gardens. Although the focus of the designs is on the provision of accommodation, retail outlets will be available on the site. A convention centre is being demolished to make room for the tower blocks.
The developer has adjusted its plans since receiving feedback. Maintaining access to public space has been a priority and this principle has been respected. A hotel is being left as it is while the nearby work is done.
Asset 1 and Eureka Funds Management (EFM) are the current owners of the site. The Riverlee Group is an organisation that includes Asset 1. Quentin Shaw, the director of EFM, has expressed his enthusiasm for the proposals. Mr. Shaw has explained the importance of the site being close to the river and the centre of the city.
