Melbourne techno whizz targets the million mark

A computer expert from Melbourne has seen his app used by around 150,000 users and stated last week that he hopes to hit a million within 12 months’ time.

Jonathan Barouch came up with the idea for an app that helped people spend their leisure time more effectively. Named ‘Roamz’, it scans social sites to gather information on how people are enjoying their evenings and weekends in their local area. Barouch felt that the information derived from social sites is more up to the minute than that gleaned from search engines or the local paper.

The Roamz app is location-based, which means that users receive information about events and venues in their immediate area. This means that a visitor to Melbourne receives advice on the nearest place to get a great cappuccino, or a tourist in the Hunter Valley gets the latest news on events and tastings at local wineries.

Barouch found that building a useful app did not guarantee that people would download it. He admits that he underestimated how crowded and noisy the app market has become.

The Roamz team used several different Forms of advertising to tell the world about the app. To his surprise, Posters did the best job of grabbing people’s attention and prompting them to download. Barouch has explained that, soon after engaging in poster printing and putting up around 1,000 Posters, his friends started tweeting and Facebooking pictures of them.

With a staff of twelve people, and 150,000 users, Jonathan is working on refining and updating his free app, which Fox News recently named one of the top alternatives to Facebook.
