Melbourne set to host new art exhibition

Australian artists and designers are set to take centre stage next month when a major new exhibition opens at the National Gallery of Victoria.

The exhibition, which has been given the name ‘Melbourne Now’, will showcase the work of more than 300 artists, designers and architects from across the city and is the largest show the gallery had ever staged.

Both established and new artists have been asked to take part, with many creating new pieces especially for the exhibition. Work on display will include photographs, installations, videos, sculptures, paintings, jewellery and ceramics.

National Gallery of Victoria director Tony Ellwood said Melbourne was a very creative city. He said:

“Melbourne has a dynamic creative identity, and through several key themes such as the poetics of place, history and memory, independent production, play and participation, visitors to Melbourne Now can explore the complexity of the city’s creativity in a major exhibition over the summer months."

There will also be a number of activities on offer during the exhibition at the St Kilda Road site, including special children's workshops, performances from local groups and the chance for collectors to show off their items.

Printing services could be called upon to provide Brochures and Flyers for the event. Visitors may want to take information home to look through in their own time.

Melbourne Now will be held at the gallery's Ian Potter Centre in Federation Square and the National Gallery of Victoria International in St Kilda Road. The exhibition opens on Friday November 22 and runs until January. It is open from 10:00am to 5:00pm each day and entry is free.
