Film festival to celebrate the best of world cinema

The 2014 staging of the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) marks the 63rd year this iconic event has brought the best of the world’s cinematic stage to Australia.

The festival, which was established a year after its famous Cannes counterpart, will be based at Melbourne Victoria’s Forum Theatre in Flinders Street.

Organisers have selected a wide variety of cinematic treats representing film works from more than 50 countries. However, regular fans of the event can attest there is a great deal more to the annual film festival, including gala nights, special events and parties held throughout Melbourne CBD.

MIFF is also renowned for discovering new talent by its ability to showcase the works of both established and fledgling Australian filmmaking talent. The event draws many professionals, including actors, directors and producers who are able to compare the latest filmmaking efforts from around the world, while also acknowledging promising new talent.

The festival, which is promoted on the internet and through brochure and flyer printing, attracts more than 165,000 people to Melbourne each year.

Established in 1952, MIFF is listed among the world’s oldest film festival events, and its success in Australia accentuates its importance in presenting a smorgasbord of international filmmaking gems.

It is at major festivals such as this that many of the country’s future writers, producers, directors and actors are discovered.

The 17-day event will be held from 31st July to 17th August.
