Fashion label faces backlash for using 'F word'

Businesses have been warned not to cross the line with their advertising. This warning was prompted by the use of the "F" word in an ad campaign by teen fashion label Dangerfield.

The advertisements themselves have been placed in the suburbs of Melbourne. Dangerfield used printing services to create Posters that have been put up throughout the city. This move is unusual as most Melbourne brands avoid foul language in their marketing campaigns. This is partly due to the fact that people who live in the state of Victoria face on-the-spot fines for swearing in public. Melbourne also has a strong parents association who believe that this type of language has no place in fashion.

In light of this stunt marketing experts are now advising start-up businesses to exercise caution when creating ad campaigns. Although banner and poster printing is vital for any marketing campaign, experts say that while stunt marketing is an effective way to make a powerful statement, it does have its downsides.

This type of marketing is generally very effective when a brand has a product that is considered "buzz worthy". However experts warn that business stand to face considerable backlash if their campaign is too shocking. This is evidenced by the reaction to the advertisements put out by Dangerfield. Another danger that businesses face when planning this sort of advertising is concentrating too much of their time and money on the stunt. In some cases this will boost brand awareness. However, small businesses that put all of their resources into an unsuccessful campaign may not be able to recover from the loss.
