Exhibition puts twist on traditional Christmas window display

Decorated Christmas windows took on a new look recently when artists participated in a new challenge to transform glass cabinets lining the Degraves Street underpass in Melbourne into a festive celebration with a difference.

The initiative was part of the City’s Creative Space programme and saw an input of diverse ideas focused around the ‘Meaning of Christmas’ theme from 12 local artists.

As a result, unconventional installations were created and displayed in The Dirty Dozen cabinets. These were thought to be certain to challenge people’s perceptions of Christmas in a new and offbeat way by Melbourne City’s Arts and Culture portfolio chair Cr. Rohan Leppert.

Located in Campbell Arcade, which is beneath the train station in Flinders Street, the exhibition is the second mounted in the space since it was reactivated earlier in 2015.

Each festive installation was created to both contrast and complement with traditional retailers’ festive displays, many of which have been the focus of promotional Postcards and Brochures in the city during years gone by.

Cr. Rohan said the location of the unique Christmas exhibition in one of the city’s busiest and oldest commuter underpasses will provide great exposure for all artists participating, while also being an inspiration and joy to visitors and commuters.

The Creative Spaces Christmas Show has been featured on brochure printing throughout the city and will run until January 31, from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm Monday to Friday, and 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Saturday.
