A community Open Day was held recently to celebrate the completion of a $19.48m refurbishment of the Carlton Baths.
The event was a dual celebration, as it also marked the 100th anniversary of the historic pool’s 1916 opening.
The upgrade was a City of Melbourne, Victoria project which Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said was conducted in two stages.
He said the works were needed to improve accessibility for all pool users, and to upgrade the well-worn facility for the benefit of future generations.
The facility has been the focus of many Postcards, Holiday Cards and booklet printing projects during the past century due to its historic significance.
He said the first stage of the works had included a $14.03m upgrade in 2012, which saw the creation of new spaces for family and community services, new group fitness rooms and a contemporary gymnasium, plus updated change rooms and a refurbished stadium.
The $5.45m final stage included a new pool for toddlers, as well as shade sails and modern play equipment.
The Mayor said the pool floor had also been levelled, the pool shell replaced, and slip-resistant tiles, an access ramp and new decking installed.
He said the revamped Carlton Baths are very different to the facility swimmers enjoyed in 1916, when the baths were not chlorinated or heated and a water purification system did not exist.Get a Free Quote for Holiday Cards Get a Free Quote for Postcards
