Australia Presses UN to Relax Rules on the Marketing of Junk Foods

It has been reported that Australia wants the United Nations to change its rules regarding the marketing and production of unhealthy food products. These rules were put in place in the hopes of controlling obesity. However, Australia is now lobbying to loosen the restrictions alongside a group of other countries.

As the Australian population is now leading a more sedentary lifestyle and eating a greater amount of junk food, it is no surprise that Australia is reported to be one of the fattest countries in the world. Due to this many health professionals are displeased by this move.

If the initiative goes through, food companies will need to change the labelling on their products. Many companies will have to employ printing services in order to make sure that their product labels meet the new requirements. While this may be costly at first the new relaxed rules will boost the sales of some products.

In the month of August 2011, the state of Victoria announced that it would be spending 40 million dollars on a new Ministry of Food Initiative. This project will give residents of Melbourne and other Victorian cities access to a hotline and information sessions regarded to obesity. There will also be a marketing campaign launched in order to attract attention to these services, which may make use of flyer and poster printing services to help get the message across. The project was brought about after it was revealed that one in four Victorian children are either overweight or obese. This project goes to show that regardless of how the regulations on marketing junk foods change, Australia is serious about combating childhood obesity.
