Australia Post stamp factory opens

A new stamp-making facility has been opened by Australia Post, with the capacity to produce nearly four million Stamps every day.

The state-of-the-art Melbourne printing services operation has greatly improved the organisation’s efficiency in its capacity to produce the Stamps, as well as Express Post Envelopes and coins.

According to an Australia Post spokesperson:

“The facility is able to produce around 1.2 million gummed Stamps and 2.5 million self-adhesive Stamps on rolls; each sheet typically containing 200 Stamps and a pallet containing 800,000 Stamps.”

New issues will remain in circulation for up to 14 months, after a strategic concept and development phase lasting up to 18 months prior to production. The long cycles allow producers to balance workloads leading up to the date of issue, and produce a continual post-production flow.

The factory will also be creating stamp packs, instant issues, and even collectables celebrating special events. Special issues commemorating marking the Olympics and Royal celebrations, for example, are extremely popular with collectors, especially they are part of a limited Print run.

The large factory, employing 93 staff, officially opened last month, replacing the previous Knoxfield location which had been in operation for Australia Post since 1991.

The new complex contains cutting-edge Print company equipment, and has greater dispatch and warehouse space. It is also designed to minimise carbon emissions and energy consumption.

The previous Knoxfield facility had become unwieldy, operating in three separate buildings, with the new factory certain to create a more efficient and organised environment.
