Celebrating small business proprietors and the long-term commitment and contribution they make within the City of Melbourne, Victoria, is the focus of the 2016 Lord Mayor’s Commendations.
The initiative, first introduced in 2005, is aimed at small business owners, according to Lord Mayor Robert Doyle.
He said small business operators accounted for four out of every five businesses in Melbourne, and were the strength behind its healthy economy.
In addition, he said, they add vibrancy, colour and character to the streets, provide significant employment, and contribute greatly to the city’s “most liveable” reputation.
Categories listed on Brochures and Flyers target small multigenerational and independent business owners who have operated for at least a decade.
The Lord Mayor said small business owners previously recognised through the Commendations initiative since its launch had exceeded 500 that had been in business for longer than 10 years, 18 family-run concerns that had lasted at least 3 generations, and 20 small businesses with over 50 years of operation under their belts.
Mayor Doyle said the Lord Mayor’s Commendations was a uniquely Melbourne tradition and he urged customers and business proprietors who met the criteria to nominate as soon as possible.
He said any City of Melbourne business proprietor that has been operating continuously for a decade or more, and employs 20 or fewer people, is invited to enter.
