Melbournes west welcomes opening of new hospital

The first of a number of new hospitals planned for completion in the next few years, including one at Footscray, has opened its doors.

The $200 million Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital was officially opened recently by Jenny Mikakos, Minister for Health. The facility, which honours the legacy of Joan Kirner who was the first female Premier of Victoria, will provide local families and women with world-class paediatric and maternity services and features an intensive care neonatal unit to assist critically ill babies.

Mikakos said its namesake worked tirelessly to help people living in Melbourne’s west and this latest accolade will ensure her legacy continues for generations into the future, adding:

“More families in Melbourne’s west will be able to access the best paediatric and maternity services close to home thanks to the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital proudly built by the Andrews Labor Government.”

Meanwhile, work on the proposed $1.5 billion Footscray Hospital is expected to begin in 2020 and take about five years to complete. The site selected on the corner of Geelong and Ballarat Roads is located adjacent the Victoria University. Often, graphic design is used in the production of development proposals detailing the project’s key points of interest.

Once completed, the new facility is expected to treat an additional 15,000 more patients annually and also offer more mental health services.
