What's Happening in Essendon, VIC…

The City of Melbourne Banner Program

Like many cities, the City of Melbourne gives organizations the opportunity to fly banners throughout the city. However, there are some guidelines that those wishing to take part in the program must follow, such as the size of the printing on the banner. Those living in such suburbs as Essendon must also follow the same rules.

The objectives of the City of Melbourne Banner Program are to

"add vitality to the cityscape"

and to

"promote events and activities."

There are three types of items included in the program; standard banners, super banners and signage hub posters. Standard banners are 1600 x 750 mm and cost $77.25; they can be displayed anywhere in the city. Super banners are 4400 x 1800 mm and cost $55; they can only be displayed on City of Melbourne poles in set areas. Signage hub posters can be no larger than 775 x 2020 mm and cost $225; they can be displayed in 25 locations throughout the city.

A banner must only have one image and a font large enough to be read from a distance. The best banners are colourful with the title at the top. The banners can not be used to advertise a business or a product, they can also not be used to promote events to which the public are not invited. There is a booking priority for the Banner Program; first priority is given to City of Melbourne sponsored events, next come major city events, next are events or conferences open to the public and lastly fundraising events.
