Residents invited to join community choir

Essendon residents who enjoy singing are being invited to join singing classes with acclaimed choirmaster Dr Jonathon Welch.

The community choir Voices of Moonee Valley has returned for 2021, following its inception during COVID-19 restrictions in August last year. Its efforts culminated in December with a video of the choir singing “Happy Together”, The Turtles’ classic hit.

In comparison with the choir’s online activities during COVID, Welch cannot wait to be face-to-face with singers this year and be able to socialise, exchange music trivia and complete the sessions with a “dad joke”, for which he is known.

In a statement, Welch said 2020 was a stressful time, and he added:

“The thing about choirs is people come together because they are like-minded and passionate about music and from that grows some really lovely friendships and connections.”

Retired teacher Ann Ramsey is a member of the choir and was inspired to join following a council flyer printing campaign to residents. When she received the leaflet in her letterbox seeking people to join, she said she jumped at the opportunity.

The weekly vocal classes, which are open to everyone who likes to sing, whether they are experienced or simply possess a passion for the art, are being made possible jointly by Moonee Valley City Council, the Clocktower Centre and Play It Forward.

Classes will take place on Fridays at the Clocktower Centre between 11am and 12.30pm, with the next 10-week rehearsal sessions to begin on April 23.
