Festival deemed a success in Moonee Valley

Queens Park in Moonee Ponds came alive with music and entertainment recently with the 36th Moonee Valley Festival.

The festival is the largest community event in the Moonee Valley area and many residents of nearby Essendon went along for a fun family day out.

The main stage featured music from Melbourne based performers including Monique Brumby, winner of an ARIA award, and folk singer Benny Walker. The community stage featured local performers while the youth stage showcased some of the area’s young talent.

There were also a number of demonstrations throughout the day, including taekwondo, calisthenics, belly dancing and Chinese dancing. Children were able to get their faces painted and many played in a giant sandpit while adults wandered around the festival stalls.

With a focus on sustainability and health and fitness, many of the stalls offered programmes that local residents could get involved with. Brochure printers helped the groups provide information for people to take home, including details of initiatives such as the Moonee Valley Leisure Challenge and the My Smart Garden programme.

Budding artists also helped to create a three-dimensional pavement artwork with the help of the community chalk art project and many took the chance to meet Moonee Valley Mayor Narelle Sharpe and local councillors over a champagne breakfast.

Visitors to the The Moonee Valley Festival, which took place on Sunday February 24th, were also encouraged to cycle and use the free bike parking or use public transport to get to the park.
