Essendon area set to gain new sports stadium

The City of Moonee Valley, which incorporates the suburb of Essendon, has sought funding from state and federal governments to help build a new sports stadium.

The council says it will construct the stadium at East Keilor by 2020 using its own budget if it is successful in getting grants worth $20 million for other projects in the area.

At a recent meeting, councillors recognised the need for netball and basketball courts in the district. Construction of a new stadium at Quinn Grove Reserve had already been flagged to occur between 2023 and 2025 but it has now been moved up to a high priority project. On top of the requested $20 million, the council has applied for $30,000 from the Victorian Government’s Community Sports Infrastructure program.

While the exact number of courts to be built is yet to be determined, Essendon Netball Club secretary Melissa Heenan told the Herald Sun the plan is good news. She said:

“This is a win-win, providing not only a new competition venue but also facilities for training, and possibly coaching clinics, which could be held all year with no risk of weather implications.”

Moonee Valley Council conducted a letter box drop about the project but received no feedback from local residents. Council mail outs often require the use of custom letterheads.
