Essendon area racecourse set for regeneration

Moonee Valley Racing Club, a 40-hectare racecourse situated in Moonee Ponds, near Essendon, is set to be redeveloped with the construction of Moonee Valley Park, an urban village expected to recreate the area.

The development is a joint project between the racing club, developer Hamton Property Group and Hostplus. With a history that dates back to 1883, the racecourse’s future is set to be secured with the new development, which will also provide fundamental residential property in the rapidly growing area.

The residential masterplan will deliver 2,000 apartments and townhouses, entertainment facilities and commercial office spaces. The racecourse itself will undergo a major renovation, including a state-of-the-art grandstand that will enhance the night-racing experience and an upgrade to the track itself.

Additional amenities will include cafes, retailers and leisure areas. Keeping in mind a proximity to nature and green spaces, Hamton has made every effort to incorporate natural and botanical elements into the master plan. It has created what it regards as a “neighbourhood within a park”, having designed a grand botanical park before the buildings were added into the plan.

Major redevelopment projects such as this tend to generate interest during the construction phase. Printing services are often enlisted to create promotional material in the lead up to completion.

Construction will be rolled out in stages, and the development is expected to be completed by 2024.
