Cycling team gets in gear for Nationals

As the 2014 Cycling Australia Road National Championships approach, the Essendon SKODA Cycling team has headed to the Burrambeet and Buninyong courses to prepare for the upcoming competition taking place this week.

The route for the Under 23 road race will cover 132.6 kilometres of land, uphill and down throughout Buninyong, while Sturt Street will be the location for the Criterium. Sponsors likely to find their way onto any promotional banner printing for the event will include Essendon SKODA, which is sponsoring the team.

The latest member of the team is Liam White, 19, who resides in Ballarat and is one of the Ballarat-Sebastopol Cycling Club members. The team has been busy planning strategies for the different categories, although White has been restricted due to his studies.

This will be the first national event for the team and seven riders will compete in all categories for Under 23s. The manager and owner of the team, Bob Kelly, said that although the members of the team were young, he hoped that they would finish among the first 20 competitors.

Cadel Evans has also created a stir at the event, as he has registered for the Elite Men’s Road Race and is the champion of the 2011 Tour de France. Organisers of the event expect more than 600 entries for the categories, while it is believed that the crowd will number in excess of 20,000.

The event will be held from January 8 - 12 and comprises time trials, road races and Criterium championships.
