Children's stories to be shared in Moonee Valley

Youngsters from Essendon and around Moonee Valley are being encouraged to write and draw their own story books in the build up to National Children’s Week.

The Moonee Valley council has organised an exhibition called The Story Tree, which will tour the city’s libraries in the coming months and feature books that have been written and illustrated by children living in the area.

The Moonee Valley mayor, Councillor Narelle Sharpe, said the initiative began at the Moonee Valley Festival to encourage children to enjoy reading and storytelling, but the results were so good that the council decided to share them with the wider community.

The creations provided a great insight into local children’s lives and their hopes and dreams, she said.

From June, young library visitors will also be able to create their own books either while they are at the library or by taking the templates home and creating in their own surroundings.

Parents who are particularly proud of their children’s books could ask a print company to create several copies that could be bound and then shared with relatives.

The tour started this month and the display will be on show at a different library branch each month until October, when National Children’s Week takes place. For details of the exhibition times and locations, visit the City of Moonee Valley council website or ask at a library.
