The $5.25 million tender has been awarded to Harris HMC Interiors, which is set to transform the historic building, formerly the Masonic Hall, into a contemporary art gallery together with the addition of a modern extension described by Mayor Matthew Kirwin as ‘dynamic'.
The Mayor said Council had received some good prices to carry out the project which will, when complete, provide a great venue to house a spacious regional art gallery in Melbourne's South East. He described the nearest gallery in Narre Warren as ‘too small'.
He told the June 22 Council meeting that the Gallery of Art would add to the City's commitment toward culture and art and said he expected it to become a popular attraction that would encourage more visitors, adding:
“Dare I say it, it will be likely to be in such demand for professional art exhibitions that I suspect we will continue to have a need for Walker Street (Gallery) as a Community Arts Centre.”
Brochure printing campaigns often alert locals and visitors to the many exhibitions and events at galleries and other facilities throughout the city.
Harris HMC Interiors presented well during the tendering process, having had previous experience with art gallery projects and historic buildings.
