Standing three metres tall, the neon rocket is constructed of steel and features a retro-style design sits atop the outdoor drive-in’s box office, with each of the letters lighting up individually before a flame flashes from the rocket.
According to cinema proprietor David Kilderry, the new attraction has captured the imagination of people, with many stopping to snap photographs or shoot videos of the sign when it lights up the night skies.
Graphic design specialists have assisted a number of local businesses to create effective displays that involve neon lighting in the suburb.
The Dandenong Market, for example, is home to The Dandy Pig, which shines like a beacon while shoppers and traders conduct business on the site.
Kilderry said he and his brother Matthew opted for the neon light option to try and recreate the ‘50s and ‘60s atmosphere of movie theatres.
The creators of the sign were Icon Creations, and representative Rick Ruitenbach said the use of neon was ideal for the sign because it created a feeling of nostalgia. He explained:
“This is new-age neon. Traditional neon is blown glass filled with gas but our Signs are LED lookalikes which are more environmentally responsible and economical to run.”
Icon Creations has also designed signs for the introduction of Debenhams, a UK department store, into Australia, as well as for popular television series `The Block’.
