A celebration of the important role the arts, technology and science play in the daily lives of locals is being held by libraries throughout Greater Dandenong, Victoria.
Dandenong and Springvale libraries have begun hosting a range of programmes that give visitors an opportunity to take part in everything from the making of comic Books and gaming development, to a tech savvy seniors workshop.
A Dandenong Library spokesperson said that on August 26, the focus will be on entrants in the 2016 heats of the Australian Poetry Slam competition.
He said the annual event will see participants whispering, screaming, speaking or singing their monologues, lyrics, poems or stories to an attentive audience who, armed with note pads if required, will then judge the performances.
According to a competition organizer, the event encourages entrants to stand up in front of an audience and speak out using a microphone, their voices and some imagination.
He said the Australian Poetry Slam, which has been held annually for the past 12 years, was among the world’s most respected and largest performing writers’ programmes. It combines poems and stories with hip-hop and theatre, he said.
State winners from Victoria will go on to perform at the national finals to be held in October for a chance to present workshops and perform at the International Writers’ and Readers Festival in Indonesia and China in 2017.
