A trial involving the provision of free parking in the centre of Dandenong CBD is to be introduced following a recent decision by Council.
Greater Dandenong Council will run a 12-month trial to be conducted throughout the central business hub between Clow and Foster streets in a bid to revitalise the Lonsdale Street precinct.
It is expected that Council will miss out on up to $350,000 in possible revenue as a result of the trial. Parking time limits will still be applicable for drivers. In addition, fees for the use of tables and chairs on footpaths will be waived for a period of two years.
A report by Greater Dandenong Council revealed other areas of the CBD such as the Little India and Afghan precincts, the Plaza and the Market had been thriving. However, retailers outside of those areas were struggling. It went on to state that large vacant spaces had been left in Lonsdale Street after it had lost seven bank branches.
To add to traditional methods of promotions such as Business Cards and Flyers by individual establishments, Council also plans to launch a new marketing campaign to help encourage more people to Lonsdale Street food outlets.
