A new neon rocket along the South Gippsland Highway has attracted the attention of many passersby. The retro-style, three-metre steel design can be seen on top of the Lunar Drive-In box office.
According to David Kilderry, co-owner of the Lunar Cinema, people enjoy taking photos and videos of the sign every night. The individual letters on the neon sign take turns to light up, which is then followed by the flash of the rocket flame.
Apart from the rocket neon sign, a Dandy Pig sign is also available at the Dandenong Market. There is also another similar Truck Bits neon sign that can be found along South Gippsland Highway.
Residents from Springvale may be lucky enough to spot the interesting neon drive-in Signs when driving past the spots in Dandenong city.
According to Kilderry, his brother sought a sign that would remind people of the ‘50s and ‘60s movie theatres. The siblings approached Icon Creations, which took on the challenge to make the current eye-catching, traffic-stopping neon rocket. Although the sign cost the siblings tens of thousands of dollars, the Kilderrys are happy with it as a replacement of their old sign, which they describe as “boring”.
The Kilderry brothers have provided some inspiration in terms of business advertising - by making an attractive neon sign from the business’s Logo Design, more customers will likely be drawn to the premise and help to promote the brand via word of mouth.
