The local authority was awarded the Litter Prevention prize at the Keep Australia Beautiful Sustainable Cities Awards, announced in June, for a programme designed to educate residents in Dandenong and surrounding suburbs about the problem of dumping rubbish and how to report people seen littering.
The scheme increased public awareness and led to a growth in the number of rubbish dumping incidents being reported
The council could promote its new title by asking Stationery printers to include the accolade in a newly designed letterhead, as well as using it in promotional material.
Dandenong featured heavily in the awards, with the council being a finalist in six categories. It was highly commended for two projects, including its Great Bin Swap campaign, which encouraged residents to obtain new bins to separate recycling and green waste from other rubbish.
Dandenong Mayor Sean O’Reilly said the council was determined to keep improving the local environment. He commented:
“We know that the environment is more than trees and animals. It is the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, the way we travel and the buildings we live in. We are overwhelmingly committed to creating a sustainable municipality for our future generations.”
