Dandenong is set to be home to Victoria’s first Indian Cultural Precinct, the State Government has announced.
The Minister for Multicultural Affairs Robin Scott, and Member for Dandenong Gabrielle Williams, have revealed that Dandenong’s Little India area will receive state funding to become a formal cultural precinct.
The city was chosen after consultation with the Indian community and local people, and a feasibility study. The areas will be designed to act as a focal point for Dandenong’s Indian residents, as well as offering other people the chance to learn more about the culture and hosting festivals other events.
The Victorian State Government will contribute $500,000 to the precinct, which will be developed around Dandenong’s Little India area. The area in Foster Street is already home to around 30 shops selling a range of goods, including saris, jewellery, spices and sweets, and visitors can book guided tours around the shops, including dinner in one of the local restaurants.
Signs and poster printing could be used to keep visitors and residents informed about the precinct’s development and future events, perhaps incorporating the current pink and gold branding.
Around 7% of Dandenong’s population were born in India, making it the third largest cultural group in the city, and more than 100,000 Indians live in Victoria.
Another precinct will be developed later in Wyndham in Melbourne’s west.
