Dandenong’s new public square now has its official name, after a public consultation.
The City of Greater Dandenong Council asked locals to suggest names for the space which is part of the city’s new civic centre that opened in March.
The square can hold up to 2,500 people and offers a place for residents to meet and relax, as well as hosting public events and features a large screen - showing images and films from around Dandenong - the site also houses the Council’s offices and a new library.
More than 150 suggestions were put forward when the council originally asked for names, and five were chosen as a shortlist. Those five were then put out to consultation with the public before Harmony Square was chosen as the final title.
In a press release announcing the decision, the council said Harmony Square was chosen because it reflected the embracing culture of the city and promotes the area’s acceptance and community spirit.
The new name will no doubt feature heavily in promotional material such as poster printing by the council.
The council has also installed the name in large letters across the square, which will remain for around eight weeks to allow people to get used to the new moniker. Residents are also being encouraged to take their photo alongside the sign and share it on social media.
