One year shy of its 60th annual staging, the festival's attendance reached over 10,000 people when it was held on January 26, 2020 at Dandenong Park. A recent online ceremony was held to award the council, which is now a contender in the National Awards that are set to be announced sometime in October.
The encouragement and promotion of best industry practice, as well as the acknowledgement of outstanding work by teams and individuals employed within the leisure and parks industry, are the primary aims of the PLA Awards.
This year's PLA award is not the first for the council, which took out the same accolade for its Springvale Snow Fest in 2019. This event was attended by an estimated 40,000 people.
Events like these are usually easily identifiable, as organisers often display welcoming signage that features a council's Logo Design and the name of the event.
Mayor of Dandenong, Jim Memeti, described the Australia Day celebrations as an important community event and added:
“The Australia Day Festival is a celebration of our similarities and our differences and gives everyone an opportunity to connect.”
