The hostel, constructed over 40 years ago, had a capacity to accommodate over 1,000 refugees and migrants. The welcome of the Springvale Council mayor at the time set the standard when he said:
“You are welcome. Become part of this community but retain your culture and your language. Build your places of worship. Form your own social clubs.”
The legacy of the harmonious community development continues to this day, with the rose and sculpture garden considered as being of national significance in appreciating former residents and staff. Former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser said:
“The project clearly shows what happens when new migrants are welcomed with open arms and brought into the community. It adds to the diversity.”
The gardens, consisting of over 200 rose bushes, is a fitting acknowledgment of the significant influence the hostel had in Springvale’s development.
In the space of 23 years, over 30,000 people from all corners of the world have resided at the hostel before settling in the area. The welcoming environment reinforced Springvale and Dandenong’s reputation as an inclusive and multicultural destination.
