Expressions of interest are being called from developers to transform a well-known Dandenong site, in conjunction with the urban renewal project ‘Revitalising Central Dandenong’.
The project will focus on land located near Dandenong Railway Station and provides an opportunity to establish a vibrant and new mixed-use sector, which will also incorporate the Little India precinct renowned for its longevity as a cluster of Indian commerce and culture.
According to a Development Victoria spokesperson, guidelines for the redevelopment ensure Little India’s cultural significance will be respected and cultural themes of India will be incorporated into the new hospitality and retail spaces.
Graphic design is usually incorporated into the preparation stages of new projects, which also involve consultation with the community and local traders.
The 19-hectare central city site is located within the borders of Dandenong Railway Station, Cheltenham Road and Halpin Way. The spokesperson said it expected the project will attract private sector investment of some $100 million. Subsequent to the appointment of a developer in 2020, work is expected to begin in 2023.
The Victorian government has invested an estimated $290 million into the Revitalising Central Dandenong project which, according to the spokesperson, has generated private investment worth up to $700 million.
Many aspects of the project have already been realised including improved safety and pedestrian connections on Lonsdale Street and developments such as Quest Apartments and the State Government Services Hub.
