As usual, the judges had a wealth of talent to choose from this year. Citizen of the Year was awarded to Craig Hancock, who has voluntarily dedicated his time for over 10 years to the Noble Park Scout Club and Parkmore Junior Football Club. Hancock humbly stated:
“I’m only a cog in a big wheel of many people who work hard behind the scenes to keep them going.”
Sahema Saberi, who arrived from Afghanistan as a refugee only seven years ago, won the Young Achiever of the Year award. The 21 year old is fluent in five languages, which she utilises to assist migrant families. She also founded the Australian Hazara Students’ group, and performs volunteer work at the Dandenong Hospital emergency department.
The Good Neighbour of the Year award was won by Dawn Vernon, for her tireless efforts as president of the Greater Dandenong Neighbourhood watch. She is also a member of the community safety advisory committee.
After more than 30 years of volunteering as president of Springvale’s Learning and Activities Centre, Graham Don was awarded Non-Resident of the Year. He is also involved with the Springvale RSL and the Naval Association of Australia.
