Iconic heritage-listed Signs, including Dandenong’s Dandy Pig, that represent neon advertising’s golden age in Australia are being celebrated.
The latest issue by Australia Post features the Dandy Pig on its Stamps for large letters currently selling for $1.40. The stamp was designed by the Australia Post Design Studio’s John White.
The Dandy Pig holds a sentimental spot in the hearts of many long-established residents in Dandenong, who remember the landmark neon pig that tipped its top hat to passers-by between 1950 and 1983 on behalf of its founder the Gippsland Co-operative Bacon Curing Company. It also featured as the logo on the firm’s letterhead and business card printing.
In 1993, the Dandy Pig was resurrected and restored to become the Dandenong Market’s mascot. The sign was once again removed to allow for the $26m redevelopment of the site before reappearing as the market’s mascot during an official ceremony conducted by Mayor of Greater Dandenong Angela Long in 2013.
Mayor Long said the sign was acknowledged for its historical, cultural and social significance within the community. The latest stamp issue celebrates the icon in a souvenir sheetlet pack, with the cover hosting a lighted feature.
