The Dandenong Show will take place at Greaves Reserve during the weekend of November 12-13. The show, which is organized by the Dandenong Agricultural and Pastoral Society, is celebrating its 140th anniversary this year; the show began in 1871 as a way for local farmers to meet business contacts and to showcase their livestock.
Today, the show has a lot more to offer than livestock. There are now displays of hot rods presented by the Classic & Hot Rod Club of Victoria, trucks, a motorbike stunt show by Whip Industries, carnival rides, a gumboot throw, an animal nursery, a dogs flyball competition, a battle of the bands presented by the local Rotary Club, a baby show from Baby Second Heaven and it will all be finished off with a fireworks show. The Dandenong Show has become a popular event in Victoria and draws approximately 20,000 visitors each year; this year organizers are hoping for an even larger turnout.
Local farmers and ranchers still use the show as a way to network with each other; it is not unknown these days for a farmer to possess and to hand out a business card.
