Croydon residents to safely dispose of toxic items

Residents of Croydon have an opportunity to be able to safely rid their homes of old household cleaners and other potentially toxic chemicals thanks to an initiative from Sustainability Victoria.

Most modern households tend to collect a range of potentially hazardous chemical materials, which largely are unable to be disposed of as part of the local council’s regular household waste handling. However, the “Detox Your Home” programme will allow residents to prepare and dispose of these items in a safety conscious manner.

Accepting items that are either corrosive, toxic, flammable or can serve as an oxidizing agent, the sorts of items that residents can dispose of via the programme include cleaning products, glues, solvents, pool chemicals and pesticides, to name a few. There are some restrictions, and waste containing asbestos, batteries, paint and motor oil will not be accepted. Community programmes such as this can benefit from flyer printing to provide residents with key details and advice.

Before people attend the event, it is highly recommended that they visit the Sustainability Victoria website for instructions and tips on how to safely handle and prepare their chemicals for disposal. Where possible, it is recommended that items be disposed of in their original Packaging or are clearly labelled.

The Croydon Detox Your Home event is scheduled for Sunday, 24th October at the Maroondah City Council Operations Centre. More information is available on the Sustainability Victoria website.
