A chance to have an artwork hanging in the Maroondah Art Collection is up for grabs in the 2016 R&M McGivern Art Prize.
Artists from Croydon, Victoria and throughout the Maroondah City Council area are invited to submit an original artwork for the competition, which will see the winner’s entry acquired for inclusion in the Council’s impressive Art Collection.
Councillor Les Willmott said the arts were well supported in the city with a wide range of opportunities on offer including visual art exhibitions, activities, workshops and lifestyle classes.
He said there was also the Maroondah Art Trail through city cafes and engaging public art in purpose-built facilities and parks. Many artworks have also featured on Holiday Cards and Postcards.
The theme of this year’s competition is Text, the councillor said.
Artists are required to reflect the concept in the painted word or artwork. Only original artworks in watercolour, acrylic, gouache or oil will be accepted. Finalists will be pre-selected by an expert selection panel on July 5, and successful entries will be on show between September 17 and December 11 at the ArtSpace at Realm.
Cr Willmott said the exhibition opening will coincide with the announcement of the overall winner of the 2016 Art Prize. The local competition was made possible by the late Muriel McGiven who the councillor said help shape an important art legacy for the city. Entries close on May 31.
