Multi-purpose sports stadium coming to Gold Coast suburb
A Gold Coast stadium capable of seating thousands of sports fans has been announced ahead of the Commonwealth Games in 2018.
Following the approval of the 7,500-seater, which is set to be built in Coomera, the chairman of the 2018 Commonwealth Games Federation, Nigel Chamier, said that the facility will be open to a range of uses in the build-up to the Games in four years’ time.
He explained that the 10,000 sq m site – which is due to be completed in 2016 – will be used for hosting netball and gymnastics finals.
Speaking further, Chamier said that Coomera – which borders areas such as Southport and Ashmore – doesn’t have the necessary sporting venues. He called the newly announced stadium “wonderful”.
The Federation’s list of approved venues also includes Coomera’s new leisure centre.
Chairman Chamier said he believes the area’s locals will understand the advantages associated with involvement in the Games once the 2014 event has been held in Glasgow, Scotland. Professional brochure printers could be called upon to provide informative leaflets.
