Major charity cycle to celebrate milestone

Thousands of cyclists are preparing to compete in the state’s largest bike ride, which in 2014 is marking its tenth year.

The Santos GLNG Brisbane to the Gold Coast Cycle Challenge is held annually to raise money for charity.

Last year, almost 8,000 people took part and even more are expected to take up the challenge for the 2014 event, which kicks off at Brisbane’s South Bank and covers a 100km course to finish at the Broadwater Parklands in Southport, Queensland.

The challenge gives cyclists a rare opportunity to ride 17km of the course free of traffic on the South East Busway, before exiting and riding the remainder of the trip along suburban and service roads.

This year’s event provides a number of options for participants who do not wish to ride the full 100km course. The alternatives include a 60km route that extends from Logan all the way to part of the Gold Coast, or a 40km ride between Brisbane and Logan.

A special women’s riding category has also been introduced.

Organisers said the annual event has already raised over $135,000 to aid the Heart Foundation and, as well as the charity aspect, it also raised public awareness of the health benefits of activities like cycling.

Flyer printing for delivery throughout communities along the course has helped boost entries in the challenge, which will take place on Sunday, October 19th.
