Council takes coastal education to the beaches

Children from Southport, Queensland and throughout Gold Coast City will be able to take part in coastal education programmes in a new outdoor learning space at The Spit.

Mayor Tom Tate recently unveiled the new facilities built at a cost of $110,000 and featuring a miniature amphitheatre that could accommodate up to 36 children.

The introduction of the new Federation Walk seating facility was seen as another way of promoting joint stewardship of Gold Coast City’s ocean beaches, according to Mayor Tate.

He added that the establishment of the ampitheatre provided an opportunity for everyone to enjoy a beach experience, while also giving students taking part in Naturally GC and CoastEd sessions each year convenient and easy access to the nearby beach and wetlands.

Mayor Tate said the new facility became a reality thanks to the support of community stakeholders and the Friends of Federation Walk, who provided valuable input into the design elements of the project to ensure it complemented the recently installed interpretive signage, surrounding topography and existing landscape.

He said the amphitheatre would prove invaluable in attracting greater numbers of student groups to the popular Federation Walk location to gain education on its significance as a wildlife and coastal vegetation corridor, which has previously been highlighted through postcard printing.

Funding for the mini amphitheatre at Federation Walk was provided by Division 7 Local Area Works and the City of Gold Coast.
