Survey reveals koalas calling Logan home is widespread

The likelihood of Slacks Creek, Queensland residents sighting koalas close to their homes has been increased following a survey conducted by Logan City Council.

The cute, cuddly Australian marsupial, which is one of the most featured animals on Postcards and Calendars around the country, has been the subject of a second koala scat survey across the city.

The first survey was carried out in 2014 and was more widespread while the latest survey concentrated on privately owned land.

Chair of the Parks, Health, Environment and Sustainability Committee Cr. Trevina Schwarz said the results indicated widespread distribution of koalas throughout the community.

She said it had been widely known that koalas were present due to community sightings and local legend, but the survey had backed it up.

Cr. Schwarz said private landholders had volunteered their properties, which included extensive bush areas for the survey.

The koalas were detected from Lyons and Undulla through to Greenbank, including areas such as Slacks Creek.

The city hosts Signs in some areas that indicate koalas cross at night, but the surveys help determine the extent of their presence in the local community, according to the councillor.

She urged motorists and residents to take special care when driving through the city, particularly during the warmer months when breeding season for koalas is most prevalent. Koalas are also at risk from dog attacks.
